Of all of things I’ve had to write over the past three years, this post is undoubtedly the most difficult. Protagonist Games has reached a point at which, unfortunately, I can no longer see continuing operations.
The reasons for this are many, but I do not want to expound on those in this post. Instead, I want to offer a huge thank you to everyone who has supported me and Protagonist Games over the past three years. I am extremely proud of RAWR and all of the support that it has gained over the past year.
To that end, RAWR and other Protagonist Games products will remain on sale through RPGNow for the foreseeable future. Also, while Protagonist Games is going away, that does not necessarily that this is the last we will ever see from the RAWR product line. I can not say any more than that at this time, as I am stepping away from active game design for a while.
Thank you again, and I wish you all fun and excitement as you game towards the future.
Here’s a special Friday treat for everyone!
RAWR! Figure Flats are now available on RPGNOW. They are colorful, bigger that average figure flats, and the perfect tabletop accessories for your games to thwart Nightmare’s minions.
You can download your copy of the RAWR! Figure Flats for free, here.
The last time you all heard from me was before GenCon, and a lot has happened since then.
First, GenCon was a great success for Protagoist Games and for RAWR. We made a lot of new fans, and we were able to meet up with Dan Houser, the artist of RAWR, and run around the convention floor handing out copies of the game to various people. We were unsuccessful in our plan to place a copy into the hands of the (in)famous Wil Wheaton, but we were not deterred from growing awareness of the best monster rpg on the market.
Coming back home after the con, I took some time to recover before looking at new options for moving forward. On that subject, I can currently share a couple of things about the future of RAWR.
First, I have begun a revision of the standard RAWR book that is aimed at clearing up any lingering rules and mechanics issues. Additionally, I am revising the current campaign section and restructuring it into a collection of one-shot dream adventures with an expanded section for Dream Seeds.
The revision of standard RAWR is happeing concurrent to the development of a new version of the RAWR rpg that is being written for Savage Worlds. Though nothing is official yet, I am running a beta/preview test game of Savage RAWR at MACE 2012, and Protagonist Games is hopeful to be able to announce an official Savage RAWR version in the near future.
Now to the actual announcement/news part of the update.
With the two new versions of RAWR in the works, the current version’s print format is being reduced in price to $19.99 both on our temporary eBay Store and at RPGNow. This price point reflects the new target price point for the revised version of standard RAWR and offers a great jumping on point for anyone who has been on the fence.
Why buy the First Edition print version with a Revised Edition in the works?
That is an excellent question. RAWR First Edition (as I am now referring to it) has a cohesive and progressive campaign of adventures in it. The Revised Edition will not include a full length campaign due to several reasons that I will discuss at a later time, so the First Edition will be the only way to obtain the original, full length campaign that was written for the game.
Also, the rules of RAWR are not changing. At most, a few phrases here or there will be clarified or re-worded. I am almost done with the rules revisions now, and I have found very little (if any) to change. So the core game as found in the First Edition will remain intact and will be a 99% mirror for the game rules as found in the Revised Edition.
I will make further updates about the new versions of the game as I am able. Look for a new RAWR Kickstarter in the coming weeks, and I will make sure to keep everyone informed ahead of time about campaign dates and release schedules.
Also, look for new announcements regarding new non-RAWR products coming soon from Protagonist Games.
Thank you all for your support thus far.
This summer has been full of twists and turns for Protagonist Games. A great personal loss within my family has made the last month difficult in terms of concentrating on Protagonist Games, but preparation for GenCon has taken over, and is now in full-on panic mode.
Speaking of GenCon, Protagonist Games will be in booth 1453 in the area of the vendor hall known as Enterprenuer’s Avenue. We are very excited to be at GenCon and look forward to meeting our fans as well as creating new ones.
We also have a RAWR related release that I should be able to tell you more about after GenCon. This project has been exciting, and I am so ready to share about it that I can barely stand it. But there is a proper time for sharing, and we are not quite there yet.
Well, it hasn’t been much of an update, but I blame the looming GenCon and the end of the year projects. Just know that the end of 2012 and all of 2013 will have more surprises than anybody can guess. Protagonist Games is moving ahead, full steam, no stops planned.

One of the things I’ve been trying to find the time to do over the summer is to set up an online store for our growing line up of books. After looking at several options, we have decided to set up shop on eBay, at least for the rest of the summer, and today is the store’s first day up and running!
Shop for your Protagonist Games books, and remember that each purchase of a hard copy gets you a free PDF copy of that book as well!
Coming soon will be our famous dice bags as well as a custom logo dice selection. There’s certainly more around the corner for our online store.
It is official. I have been swayed by the arguments, and I see the positive reaction already.
From here on, Protagonist Games will include a free PDF version of a game book with purchase of the print product. From now on, any visitor to our RPGNow page will have the option to buy the print version of our products and download the PDF right then and there, for free.
I believe that this is a natural and progressive move for Protagonist Games, and as we continue to move into new arenas, including retail stores, I will continue to explore new options to get our products to the people who want them in the best possible ways.

Next we are going to be at two conventions in the very near future. FORGE in Lexington, KY is our first stop, from May 25-27. At FORGE we are also releasing a special adventure module called Journey to the Forge, which has earned the honor of being the “Official FORGE 2012 Affiliate Adventure”. We are very excited about this prestigious honor, and the guys at FORGE look to be putting on a great convention. I certainly hope to see you there.
Then, less than a week later, we trek all the way to Charlotte, NC for ConCarolinas, June 1-3. Here we plan to have a bunch of fun at our booth, talking to fans, introducing people to RAWR! and Mini Six, and playing some games.
I am running games at both cons, so if you plan to be at either con and want to play in a fun game, look up the schedules and register!
After ConCarolinas it’s back to work for the summer, finishing up Volume Two of Dysphiron and our big GenCon release, I’m a Viking.
Today I would like to announce a new product and tell you a little about Dysphiron, a new fantasy adventure module multi-part series from Protagonist Games that will begin with the release of volume one next month.
Imagine a fantasy world that, centuries ago, was overrun and taken over by a united Orc Empire. The free peoples were subjugated, most enslaved to lives of hard labor. No one knows how the orcs united and prevailed, and the passing of over one thousand years of orc oppression has changed the history and the face of Dysphiron permanently.
Countless generations have now been born and died under the oppressive rule of the orcs, but still there is a rumor, a legend, of a land still free of orc control. It is a land that fights for the freedom of all peoples, and there humans and dwarves and elves and the other races work to gather their strength and defeat the Orc Empire.
But these are only legends. There may not be anything out there anymore. For a few brave adventurers, tired of the cycle of slavery imposed on their people, it is time to find out the truth. If there is indeed a land free of the Orc Empire’s tyranny, then it must be found, and it must be convinced that the enslaved peoples are worth freeing.
Dysphiron is written for Mini Six, meaning that it is OpenD6 compatible, and includes special setting rules as well as a pre-generated group of adventurers to get the game started. Volume one releases in May with subsequent volumes following every two months (approximately) after that. The modules will be available in both PDF and print formats from our company page on RPGNow.
We are excited to start this epic journey through Dysphiron together with our fans and hope that more will join us along the way.
